CMS WordpressVsDrupalVsJoomla

Hey- thanks for stopping by the blog. This site was launched June 2, so check back later or RSS for more updates, case studies and reviews of other software applications and invitations out there for suggestions and feedback.

Here is a quick one to put out into the interwebs….Wordpress, Joomla or Drupal? I was asked recently by a client why one should go with one CMS over another.

My first impression of Drupal was that it was a bit more complex than most people need. Especially because making modules on your site is not too tough with some CSS and perhaps a widget.

I kind of felt that the admin interface was not as intuitive as Wordpress. I tried getting a drupal site up on a test server and didn’t really get as far as I did with Wordpress + a Theme + tweaking that theme a little.

I’ve only spent a few minutes in Joomla but looking at is as a vehicle for a knowledge base/forum, not as something to manage your site and blog.

A few years ago, it did seem like too much work for your average wordpress newbie to do something like pick a static page and have the blog “inside” the rest of the site. This is key IMO for making a website that feels like a site with a blog, vs just a blog or just and html site.

Now, there is a very simple admin setting which allows you to set any page or post to be your home page. It’s also really simple to have your blog located yoursite.com/somefolder and your home page as yoursite.com – all from within the wordpress admin.

Anyone out there hating on Wordpress and knows something Joomla, Drupal (or other) can do that Wordpress can’t? I’ll post an update if I find out, but leave a comment if you already know.

Thanks.
